Undocumented Immigrants’ Tax Contributions Outshine Top Earners

A recent analysis has shown the significant financial contributions made by undocumented immigrants in the United States. This revelation comes as the Biden administration introduces a new immigration policy designed to support numerous families, potentially amplifying the economic benefits provided by undocumented individuals.

Impressive Fiscal Contributions

In 2022, undocumented immigrants paid an impressive $96.7 billion in taxes. This total includes $59.4 billion in federal taxes and $37.3 billion in state and local taxes. On average, each undocumented individual contributed $8,889 in taxes.

Remarkably, in 40 states, undocumented immigrants have a higher effective tax rate than the top 1% of earners.

Anticipated Benefits of New Immigration Policy

The Biden administration’s new expansion of the “parole in place” program, said to begin on August 19, 2024, is expected to enhance these contributions. The new policy will offer temporary legal status and work permits to undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens who have lived in the country for a minimum of ten years.

The White House estimates that around 500,000 families could benefit from this policy, with the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) predicting an additional $40.2 billion in annual tax contributions.
