What is Humanitarian Parole?

Humanitarian Parole allows foreign nationals, who might otherwise be ineligible, to enter the United States temporarily for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefits. This special permission can be granted for a one-time entry to fulfill specific purposes, such as obtaining medical treatment, visiting an ill family member, attending a funeral, or testifying in a court case.

Who Can Apply for Humanitarian Parole?

Individuals who can seek humanitarian parole include those outside the U.S. who cannot obtain a visa or those in detention for immigration violations within the U.S. However, individuals already in the U.S. unlawfully or temporarily should instead apply for “advance parole” or “parole in place” if they have family members in the U.S. military.

Application Process

To apply for humanitarian parole, the beneficiary or someone on their behalf must submit several key documents: Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document), Form I-134 (Affidavit of Support), and other supporting documentation. These forms establish the purpose of the visit and the source of financial support while in the U.S.

Common Reasons for Seeking Humanitarian Parole

Common urgent reasons for humanitarian parole include reuniting with vulnerable family members, caring for a seriously ill relative, attending a funeral, or participating in a legal case. Each application is unique, and the supporting evidence must clearly show the need for urgent entry.
